Food, Shadow Work, and the 3PM Awakening
I used to preach “Food is fuel for the body.” It sounded simple, even empowering—until I realized how deep that truth really went. What I didn’t see then was how intertwined it was with my own shadow work, the layers of healing waiting beneath the surface.
Even now, I can see the pattern weaving through my life and my children’s lives. It’s as though I’ve been trying to fight or suppress the very work that’s calling to be done—the work of inner healing. I often think of myself as an onion, peeling back one layer at a time as each shows itself and asks to be witnessed.
One day in the shower, I reflected on how far I’ve come from my old 3PM ritual—the secret sneaking into the kitchen to grab whatever sweet or carb I could find. At the time, I thought it was just a habit, maybe low willpower. But when I slowed down enough to truly see it, I realized what was happening.
That afternoon slump was more than fatigue—it was a mirror. Partly, yes, I wasn’t fueling my body properly. I’d start my day high on carbs and low on protein, setting myself up for a crash. But the deeper truth? I was mentally and emotionally drained, carrying the unbearable weight of worrying how others might judge me for how my kids showed up in the world.
What if I’m not doing enough?
What if people don’t understand our choices?
What if I’m failing them?
That’s a lot for any mother to hold. The #momguilt is real.
But as I softened and sat with the stories I’d been telling myself, something shifted. Presence started to become a friend—a gift. I began to see those 3PM binges as warning lights from my body, signals saying: You’re holding too much. It’s time to let go. Let go of the guilt, the control, the need to shape every outcome.
So one afternoon, as my kids melted down and my nervous system screamed for escape, I didn’t run to the kitchen. I stayed. I breathed. I let the shame, guilt, and anger rise to the surface. And as tears streamed down my face, I realized I wasn’t just crying for myself. I was crying for generations—for the mothers before me who carried fear, shame, and silence.
Each emotion felt distinct, a different energy within me, begging to be witnessed, ready to transform into light and love.
Then my mind returned to the question of food itself. I knew there had to be more to this than energy and emotion. So I dug deeper. Over the years, I’ve learned how our food systems are designed to keep us disconnected—from our intuition, our fullness, and our power. Large commercial companies have even hired former tobacco scientists to study how to make food addictive—how to trick the brain into wanting more while never feeling satisfied.
When we eat from that system, our bodies are being chemically hijacked, disrupting hormones, damaging mitochondria, and pulling us further from homeostasis—our natural state of balance.
So how much of our struggle with food isn’t actually our fault? How much of our “lack of willpower” is just our biology reacting to a system built to keep us craving?
I started to see the pattern again, this time through my kids. I’ve become incredibly strict about junk food, determined to teach them the basics of health and wellness. I told them recently, “I watched my mom die, and I’ll do everything in my power to teach you how to nourish your body before you leave this home.”
But here’s the truth: that level of control comes at a cost. It’s exhausting. It’s another mirror of shadow work—where love, fear, and protection all mingle together.
So I’m learning balance. I’m choosing to witness the shadow rather than fight it. One small shift I’ve made is giving each child a day of the week to plan and cook a meal. They use the fundamentals I’ve taught—no refined sugar, balanced protein, mindful carbs. Watching them take ownership of their choices has been beautiful.
It’s not perfect work. It’s ongoing work. But every small step counts. Every curious pause when a trigger rises. Every compassionate breath when frustration appears. Those are the invitations—your soul whispering, I’m ready to be seen.
Keep peeling the layers. Keep softening into presence.
Your healing is already happening.
And if this resonates with you—if you’re ready to explore your own connection between nourishment, emotion, and energy—I’d be honored to walk beside you.
